HABITAT for HUMANITY -- MENTORS NEEDED
Habitat for Humanity North Fulton is looking for families who are willing to become Family Mentors for future owners of Habitat Homes.  Responsibilities include building a rapport with the family to whom you are assigned, serving as a liaison between the family and Habitat; attending ownership workshops; explaining plans, payment procedures, and legal documents as necessary.  Responsibilities begin when you are matched with a family and continue until one year after the family moves into their new home.  If you are interested, please contact Wayne Smith at 770-998-6314.

HABITAT for HUMANITY -- History at Rivercliff

In 1993, the Social Ministries Committee suggested that Rivercliff Lutheran Church should begin raising money to help finance a Habitat for Humanity House.  In 1994, we helped build our first Habitat House.  Since then, Rivercliff has helped finance and build one house per year.

We work through Habitat for Humanity North Fulton, Inc.  Our role has been to provide funding for the houses and to provide about 30 workers and some of the meals during the building process.  Anyone age 17 or older is welcome to work.  Unskilled workers are most welcome.  The Youth Group typically has provided meals for at least one week during each "build" and have occasionally gotten to participate in the landscaping portion of the process.

Several members of Rivercliff have taken training from Habitat to serve as "crew leaders".  The training teaches skills needed to lead a small crew of unskilled workers to complete a specific task.  Other members act as mentors to the new home owners.  Mentors get to know the family personally and help to guide them during the building process.  The Habitat family is required to put in about 500 hours of "sweat equity" into the building of their own home and other Habitat Houses.  The mentors continue to assist the new family in developing home ownership skills once the house is completed.

The last step in a "build" is to host a reception for the new family by giving them "house warming gifts" on a Sunday after they have moved into their new home.  The receptions are hosted by the various Care Groups at Rivercliff.
